The Flying Lizards – The Secret Dub Life Of The Flying Lizards
The Secret Dub Life Of The Flying Lizards originally came out on CD in 1995, revealing the magnificent mind-meld of David Cunningham and Jah Lloyd. The source tapes were recorded in Jamaica in 1978 by Lloyd as part of a series for Virgin Records' Front Line label, but were never released. Front line then offered the tapes to Cunningham with the invitation to remix the material. Says Cunningham, “I accepted the project, expecting lots of time in one of Virgin's studios to play with the music and the equipment, only to be presented with a mono master tape. So I began to invent (or perhaps re-invent) techniques of editing, looping, filtering and subtraction to deal with unremixable mono material (these were the days before samplers. The techniques used here expanded my vocabulary of musical electronic (as opposed to electronic music) treatments and appear in a very different form on records made at that time.” The results are as surreal as you might imagine, with percussive echoes trailing like comet’s tails; haunting choral-esque melodies and glittering, prismatic guitars suspended in epic atmospherics.
