Sunny Balm - Eucalypt
You might have met Murray Collier under the name Grim Lusk, Dip Friso or / and Pussy Mothers (of which he is half), and if you’re reading this it was most likely a positive encounter! Now may we introduce his new alter ego, Sunny Balm.
Collier recorded the blue-print for this album over a few years in his native Glasgow, capturing the hypnotic timbres of balafon, agogo, hand drums, shakers and bansuri on a Tascam 388 reel-to-reel tape recorder; collecting field recordings and synth riffs; playing with drum machines and samplers and experimenting with pitch shifting, splicing and looping techniques. It all came together when he relocated to Mandurah (Manjoogoordap), the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people of the Nyoongar nation, in Western Australia.
Equipped with only a sampler and a microphone, he began to forage and reassemble these annals under the southern sun. Eucalypt, named for an iconic visual and aromatic staple of W.A., is a warm and psychotropic rhythmelody immersion somehow both lazy and frenzied, welcoming and wild. Presented by Lindsay Todd and Stuart Leith’s Sacred Summits label.
