Sandy - Traces
Geographic North present Traces, a new work from Brooklyn-based trio Sandy. The band formed in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, when a displaced Jeff Carter found safe haven in Stephen Pathe’s Manasquan, NJ house; the two started jamming together and invited Samantha Pathe to join them, and their debut revelation found a place in the Night People catalogue in 2014.
Their moody, devotional pop is delivered in four intricate doses here, Samantha Pathe’s yearning vocals adrift over enveloping synth layers and attentive / sparing drum machines and samples. The epic arpeggiated swim of “Signals” particularly touches this listener, as does the velveteen dream of “Not There,” catchily sung with a pleasantly surprising bassline, successfully shaping that bittersweet synthesis of “ambient and anthemic”.
