rkss - DJ Tools
Reimagine your relationship to club culture as a performer and / or listener-dancer with rkss' DJ Tools. Composed entirely from a sample pack called 'EDM Kicks Vol 1,' rkss manipulates these "off the shelf" sounds using computer processing techniques to transformative effect. Embracing the element of surprise, erratic but intentional animation, degeneration and regeneration, scrambled polyrhythm, unforeseen melody and patient delay, DJ Tools represents an untried method of music-making for the artist, written for live performance rather than composed at home and re-arranged for presentation in a club setting, an exercise in arranging and re-arranged "sketches" live. Says rkss, "I was beginning to re-arrange how I thought about my gender / self and placing, exploring and finding the language to point to my sense of difference as a trans person. DJ Tools was where I began to formulate my own relationship to club culture as a mostly sober, transgender person, what version of club music did I want to engage with in that social space? Fluid, dynamic and reacting to audience. Highlighting the social. Sharing & connecting through my difference rather than erasing it.”
Released on Lee Gamble's UIQ label.
