Nicolas Jaar – Pomegranates
Andrea Zarza (British Library Sound Archive) and Matthew Kent (Blowing Up the Workshop)’s Mana Records turns its progressively archival hand to remastering and issuing for the first time to vinyl Nico Jaar’s Pomegranates. An unofficial rescoring of Sergei Parajanov’s The Color of Pomegranates film, which revives the splendors of Armenian culture through the coming-of-age story of eighteenth-century poet troubadour Sayat-Nova. This alternate soundtrack overlays Jaar’s intimate, musical journeying over the intellectual, artistic, and spiritual growth of the character, which is represented in the film through iconographic compositions rather than traditional narrative. It’s playful and moving in a way that is truly (humanly) experimental.
