Michele Mercure - Beside Herself
Less songs than dreams, the compositions collected in Beside Herself were recorded, self produced and distributed by Michele Mercure as cassettes between 1983 and 1990. A time of immense, collaborative productivity for Mercure - who was making music for theatre, performance, film and TV animation at this time - this work represents the spirit of a person who gathers as much energy and momentum from working with others as working with - or beside - herself. Exploring the improvisatory possibilities of new music technology combined with the deeply personal, organic instrumental use of the voice or acoustic stringed instruments, the pieces offered have the rhythmic and textural sophistication, playfulness and emotive density of poetry, touching genre hallmarks of Komische, industrial and synth pop; and filling the spaces between. Beside Herself extends RVNG Intl.’s preservation efforts to sister label Freedom To Spend who reissued Eye Chant in 2017, an occasion marking just over twenty years since its original release on Mercure’s own Quick Shower Music imprint.
