Michael Beharie And Teddy Rankin-Parker – A Heart From Your Shadow
The aptly titled A Heart From Your Shadow is the deeply complex, avant-garde manifestation between Michael Beharie and Teddy Rankine Parker, college friends at Oberlin who went on to perform with New York ensemble Z's and Pauline Oliveros, respectively.
A Heart From Your Shadow encapsulates the intense moods of city life, shifting seamlessly between darkened club and rainy street. Parker's somber cello work glides over lush electronic droning which builds to anxious discordance, then segues into muddled drums and ethereal voices. Despite the tense and chaotic environments created, it manages to remain cathartic and oddly uplifting. Roots are in improvisation, but songs are honed in and execute a well-thought out cinematic vision, produced by Jim O'Rourke.
