Marina Rosenfeld and Ben Vida - VERTICE
For the second installment of Fridman Gallery’s fledgling vinyl label, New York-based multidisciplinary artists Marina Rosenfeld (who some may recognize from 2013's collaborative effort with Warrior Queen) and Ben Vida (a frequent Shelter Press regular and alumn of both PAN & Alku) continue the quick-witted dialogue that we first caught on 2016’s Feel Anything LP for iDEAL Recordings. Where Feel Anything stuttered out a handful of dense and restless exchanges, VERTICE finds the two settling into their fidgety and side-sprawling conversation with two longform compositions recorded live at the gallery in January 2016 and May 2019.
Improvisational, electro-acoustic jams form the heart of their collaboration expressed here via maelstroms of wild and woozy walls of noise, whirlpooling drones, crunchy turntablism and Rosenfeld’s diminutive vocals that utter fragments of thoughts. Tiny sprinklings of alien acoustics and tone gradients refract through a prism of dusty haze on "ANY LANDSCAPE", yielding a detritus that stimulates and sticks in the psyche long after it’s stopped spinning. As the dialogue progresses, elements start to ossify to a skeletal core and the palette subtly becomes more and more sparse; leeching sounds crescendo slowly while others quickly phase in and out of the sonic plane. By the time we've reached the second side on "BRANCHES", VERTICE begins to feel more like the soundtrack to a psychedelic purgatory than a strictly formalist exercise.
For the sonically adventurous and the curious ear alike!
