Maria Somerville – All My People
The debut album of Dublin’s Maria Somerville will tickle eyes, lips and spines with its deceptively simple, totally immersive ambient pop hues.
Recorded across Dublin, Cornamona and Inis Óirr, Somerville folds traditional Irish themes into her dreamy soup of folkish-drone-washed songwriting; sonically rendering the utterly unique landscape that is her home - epic and otherworldly, but also cosy, charming.
Some songs, like the stripped-back waltz “Dreaming” and pastoral garage closer “Brighter Days” openly share lineage with the country’s unique DIY folk and post-punk melding that has characterized some of their most popular twentieth century musical exports; other songs, like standout “This Way,” express the muddled clarity of expert current indie pop composition. A pleasure from start to finish.
