M Sage - Catch a Blessing

$21.00

The Spring offering from Geographic North - also its well-timed first appearance in 2019 - comes from Chicago’s M Sage, who has gifted offerings to Noumenal Loom, Orange Milk and his own imprint, Patient Sounds, which is coming up on its ten year anniversary of publishing private press records and books. Sage’s approach to experimental music combines meticulous sound collage and conceptual world building under the self-described banner of “Digital Rustic: plunderphonics and sound collage, ambience and cyberpastoralia, compositions and environments.”

In Catch a Blessing, high-concept strategies for sound-making are replaced with intuitive, whimsical modes. As suggested in the title, chance as a force for unplannable beauty and meaning is channelled into these recordings, made over a Summer in a small room of a 120-year-old apartment in Chicago. The eight pieces are loving and impressionistic portraits of the city, unfolding like the arbitrary measure of a mid summer’s day. The sound is ambiguous, impressed with organic contributions of bamboo flute, saxophone, violin, percussion and environmental recordings. Of the process guiding this creation, Sage explains: "learning to know less and to just feel more about what I am making has become important to me. I like, or am learning to like, the possibility of that openness, that uncertainty. Not knowing. It is uncomfortable, but it is nourishing."
