Kizaki Ondo Preservation Society / Clark Naito
The third edition of the EM Records' Japanese folklore series, directed by Riyo Mountains (the Japanese folk song research team formed by Mood Yama and Takumi Saito) presents Kizaki Ondo, a folk song from the Nitta Kizaki town in Gunma, north of Tokyo. Played annually by local performers at the Bon-Odori traditional summer dance festival, it is a rhythmically driven piece featuring enjoyably unabashed lyrics about prostitution. The two recordings of the song, captured in 1980 and 1981 (the latter an instrumental), bear the stamp of both their time of recording and timelessness of their composition, with resonant, bold percussion almost reminiscent of contemporary electronic and hip hop. As "extensions of tradition," Tokyo producer Clark Naito offers a vocal and an instrumental new-age-trap rendition of Kizaki Ondo that melts in the mouth.
