Jonny Nash – Make A Wilderness
A study in arid ambience and abundant atmos, Jonny Nash’s new work for Music from Memory is his most deft and nuanced synthesis of organic and electronic sound conduits yet.
The most recent full-length since 2017’s Eden (on Nash’s exemplary Melody as Truth) and collaborations Passive Aggressive (with Suzanne Kraft) and Fauna Mapping (with Lindsay Todd); Make a Wilderness is a sensitive and spacious (and living and breathing) portrait painted with sparse electronics, voice (of Laura Giavon), cello (by Janice Wong), and a careful selection of other musical tools.
Written and recorded in Amsterdam, London, Saint Michel sur Orge and Venice during 2017-18, Nash enigmatically cites the influence of Shusaku Endo, J.G. Ballard and Cormac McCarthy in their descriptions of landscape and environment, portraying “fragments from a land that is a largely silent place. An ancient place. A non-place. A wilderness.”
