Hieroglyphic Being – The Red Notes
Totally rich and absorbing, Jamal Moss's new venture is an illuminating and enlivening journey.
Nine movements make rich and textural use of an extensive sweep of instruments, giving the entirety a multiplicity of softs and hards, of timbral depth and melodic possibility. From the immediately angular-come-alleviating “Youth Brainwashing and the Extremist Cults,” where jagged synth and organ temper each other; to the murmuring “Awake and Energize;” and the IDM-touched title track, with its captivating nowhere melodies, the never-knowing when the kick is going to kick in; we find ourselves once again boggled by Moss’ ability to give such spiritual, emotional, physical, technological, philosophical, political roundedness (or edginess?) in these beautiful, hybrid styles.
Released on Soul Jazz records.
