Viola Klein - Exchange
Cologne's Viola Klein, Detroit’s Whodat and Senegalese musicians Ndongo Samba Sylla, Kim Sherobbi, Abdoukhadre, Abdou Aziz, Adramé Diop & Family converge over an intentional and reflective three-point collaboration. Klein’s vocational influences of film editing, DJing and promoting and writing, and with enthusiastic knowledge-seeking in the realms of jazz theory and house music’s inherent social force, guide her contribution to Exchange. Whodat brings beats to foundation the Family Diop’s percussion, creating a hypnotic deep-house experience. Released by Meakusma Records.
“Ndongo Samba Sylla, Kim Sherobbi, Abdoukhadre, Abdou Aziz, Adramé Diop & Family, Whodat and Viola Klein are exchanging. Whodat is a Detroiter. The beats of Whodat lay the musical foundation for the Family Diop’s sabar. The Senegalese griot family keeps the everyday tradition of sabar alive through programs in Saint-Louis’ high schools; it’s fresh when everyone is responding to one another on street corners and on patios. Ndongo Samba Sylla is a Senegalese development economist and a francophone Scrabble world champion. In Dakar, he equips environments for the youth. Kim Sherobbi is an ex-basketball player and educator at James and Grace Lee Boggs school in Detroit, where she teaches children how to be serene when things change.”
