Eli Keszler - Stadium
Eli Keszler presents his ninth studio album, an avant-jazz opus of impressive percussive dexterity, poignant melodic placement and studied philosophical hue. Adding ever-more accomplished collaborations to his resume - working with 0PN and on Age Of and Laurel Halo’s revered Raw Silk, Uncut Wood - Keszler invites listeners into a nebulous belt of elaborate sounds, dedicated as much to present and future confreres as to inspirations from 20th century jazz. Vivid textures of sound represent not only nuanced temporal and melodic manipulation but a complex understanding of dimensionality and environment, falling at times like a mosquito-net over a crumpled pile of sheets beneath and open window over Manhattan; at times like the clinking of glasses and whispered chatter at a crowded party. Ruminating on the move from South Brooklyn to Manhattan’s East Village, where Stadium was produced, these compositions offer an energy akin to that of their new island home - that is at once crowded but expansive, capricious but restrained.
