Cham-Pang – Tant Pis 81-82
Quebec’s Tenzier label present previously unreleased material from Montreal new wave group Cham-pang, composed ahead of a defining concert at the Cégep du Vieux-Montréal’s Tritorium in April of 1982.
Cham-pang was an evolving and involving collective who released their first two-song EP on YUL Records in 1981. Ne mourrez pas featured core members Allan McCarthy (from Men without Hats) on electronics and memorable performance artist Yvel Champagne on vocals, and contributions from Mario Spezza of Rational Youth and Pyer Desrochers. Champagne later collaborated with free improv / electroacoustic experimenter Bernard Gagnon, who was absorbed into the group along with Angel Calvo, of new wave outfits Vex and Rational Youth, and legendary theatre and film-maker Robert M. Lepage (!). The outfit was completed by long-time collaborators Pierre-Laurier Lamarche and Daniel Lajoie.
Tant Pis 81-82 is a subtle, noisey, vocal exploration comparable to legendary Japanese outfit Phew. Likely to leave a strong imprint on your mind.
