Andrew Pekler – Sounds From Phantom Islands
Essential new work from Andrew Pekler, creator of crumpled, wordly, dub-singed and jazz-infused downtempo. Sounds From Phantom Islands is based on recordings made for “Phantom Islands - A Sonic Atlas”, the online interactive map Pekler developed with cultural anthropologist Stefanie Kiwi Menrath. The term describes islands that, “as artefacts of European colonial expansion,” appeared on historical maps but never existed. The sounds combine imagined music and fabricated field recordings in an evocative dance between history and fiction.
Approached with curiosity and finely honed attention to detail, the album is an enveloping experience combining tactility with dreaminess. Each piece seems to chart its own intuitive course, as if extracted from a tangible and plentiful environment, despite its spurious source. Delivered to vinyl format by Jan Jelinek’s Faitiche label, home to Pekler’s previous Tristes Tropiques.
