19 Gadi Pirms Sākuma (19 Years Before the Beginning) is a compilation of devotional, mutual music. Active in Latvia in the 1980s and early 1990s, the group was led by songwriter, bassoonist, guitarist and flautist Inguna Rubene, joined by Daiga Mazversite on synthesizer, Ilgvars Riskis with percussion and Viesturs Slava adding keyboards, guitar, programming and vocals.

They started recording in Riskis apartment-studio and prepared a musical programme for an exhibition organised by NSRD’s Hardijs LediņšJuris Boiko and others at the Aizrobezu Art Museum (which is now the Art Museum of Riga Bourse). Two journalists from West Berlin attended the exhibition and were captured by the project, which from then and there began to gain momentum.

19 Gadi Pirms Sākuma demonstrates the uniquely cooperative, experimental streak in occupied Latvia’s inner world. Fans of NSRD will recognize certain psychic parallels in the music, though 19 Gadi offers something tender and quietly exalted in these songs, brightly costumed in improvised absurdity. Opening track “Pāri Upei” is a striking example of this, sung sincerely and involving harp-like keys for lofty elevation. With gratitude to Stroom, on a tear again this year.
