Vancouver via Kaifeng’s Yu Su officially joins the like-minded Second Circle community, the younger sibling of Music from Memory home to the likes of D.K. and Tornado Wallace. A gifted storyteller, both as composer and DJ, Yu’s 泉出通川为谷 / Roll With The Punches unfolds across five lush, downtempo dreamscapes. “Little Birds, Moonbath” features Michelle Helene Mackenzie on cascading modular synth, rushing over muttered speech and synth pop drum programming; “Tipu’s Tiger” is a contemplative synth and guitar duet featuring Pender Street Steppers, melting into the naturalistic ambient sound bath “Of Yesterday (Instrumental).” “The Ultimate Which Manages the Word” moves like a wind-up toy, accelerating and de-accelerating in rhythmic swirl beside warm chords; and finally, “Words Without Sound” is perhaps the most infectious of all, a party starter with dubby hues and repeated, lilting vocal fragments. The title, explains Yu, “Is a metaphor translated from an old Chinese proverb, that roughly translates as ‘The Spring flows over plains and The Valley is born’. The proverb explains the origin of ‘The Valley’ and also speaks of a very Daoist abstraction in which the ‘Thousand Things’ are born and will eventually co-exist in the metaphysical system of ‘The Valley’.”
