Nocturnal Emissions – Spiritflesh
Mannequin Records present a limited reissue of the 1988 Earthly Delights release Spiritflesh, from Nigel Ayers’ iconic multi-genre sound art project Nocturnal Emissions.
The balance of celestial and corporeal / abstract and figurative elements give Spiritflesh a quality of wholeness within the ambient realm. Church harmonium, chimes, music box and car wipers merge with digital and analogue treatments, including sampled voices of chimpanzees, cattle and african and european wildfowl. Beginning with the urging drone of “T'Cow's Yed,” its mechanical monstrous moos and robotic chirps drifting around warm, enveloping chords; and ending with the raga-esque battle cry of “Peter’s Stone;” Spiritflesh’s middle is at times filled with strife, a perplexing and complex territory, a primordial horror-film soundtrack or muddling meditative journey.
Certainly influencing decades of industrial-edged, noise-leaning experimental music, this is a timely reflection on the headier, underlit possibilities of ambient music.
