Mac-Talla Nan Creag – The Sorrow Of Derdriu
The Sorrow of Derdriu is an enchanting concept album manifested by Mac-Talla Nan Creag, a producer supergroup featuring members of Lord of the Isles, Hoch Ma Toch, and Other Lands.
It takes the listener on a vision quest back in time, through lush and shimmering compositions that storytell the myth of the heroine Derdriu, one of the most beloved figures in Celtic lore.
Mac-Talla Nan Creag weaves the knowledge of ancestor spirits with New Age synth work, field recordings, 70's psychedelia, and guitar-driven folk to create a sweeping pastiche tapestry. Slippery moss droning segues into spiritual throat singing, backed by thunder-maker, mandolin, the Irish drum bodhrán, bird calls, and the mourning sound of a conch shell. These are just a few of the traditional and modern instrumentation at work.
The Sorrow of Derdriu was partly recorded in the acoustically rich Crichton Collegiate Church in Scotland and released via Edinburgh's Firecracker Recordings. Includes a beautifully illustrated full-color booklet.
