Guerilla Welfare - The Nature of Human Nature

Portland, OR.'s unswerving Musique Plastique present The Nature of Human Nature, a compilation of crucial recordings from Guerilla Welfare made between 1986 and 1991. The combined brainpower of Edmonton, Alberta-based duo Curtis Ruptash and Brian Schultze and occasionally (and wonderfully) the poet Mary Howes results in a collage of political rabble, candid soliloquies, repetitious mallet percussion, folkish acoustic lilts and sitar all laced with pure dubby spring reverb wetness. Memorable hit "Fear Arises" plays out not dissimilarly to the deadpan jerk of Savant; the Balaeric guitar lines and noddy percussion of "Thought Breeds Fear" is another highlight, alongside the sensual but not sleek spoken-word exoticism of "Rock-A-Bye." Unmissible.
